About
SHI’s Indigenous Science program, also known as STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math), provides culturally centered youth programming to students in grades 6–12 that is grounded in Indigenous knowledge and STEAM career connections. Through the program, SHI offers mentor-apprenticeships and a summer academy. Students and teachers work alongside cultural specialists and professional researchers to build a deeper connection to the places they call home. Current and recently graduated high school students can engage in AISES (American Indian Science and Engineering Society) research projects, field internships, and professional mentorships to help them achieve their academic and career goals. Makerspace activities combine cutting-edge tools with Alaska Native values in classrooms, summer academies, and out-of-school clubs and events.
STEAM Hosts
SHI sponsors a mentorship program for professionals who want to pass on their knowledge to students interested in science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics. SHI is looking for adults to share their experiences with Alaska Native and Native American students on the benefits and realities of postsecondary training and entering a STEAM field. Mentor time commitment is a maximum of 20 hours over the course of one semester. Meetings take place over Zoom and in person with additional in-person meetings as an encouraged option.

STEAM Interns
SHI sponsors an internship program for students interested in science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics. The program allows students to learn new skills and explore their career options and offers the following:
- Opportunities for field work, job shadows, and networking with professionals in our communities
- Discussions on options and potential barriers for Alaska Native and Native American students in STEAM
- The chance to build friendships with a regional cohort of students
- Monthly online meetings with independent work

Indigenous Science Academy
SHI sponsors an Indigenous Science Academy for students entering grades 6–8 through its STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math) program. Students create, explore, make, and problem-solve with place-based, culturally relevant STEAM activities, which may include such things as outdoor projects, paddle carving, interactive STEAM lessons, games, art, and cultural activities.
