Students & Youth

SHI serves children and young adults through programs that promote its mission to perpetuate and enhance Tlingit, Haida, and Tsimshian cultures. Programs are offered through culture camps, parent and educator training, workshops, and classrooms.

  2. Early Childhood

    SHI operates Baby Raven Reads, a culturally focused early literacy program for parents and children ages 5 and under.

  3. Elementary School Programs

    SHI co-founded and now funds the groundbreaking Tlingit Culture, Language, and Literacy (TCLL) program within the Juneau School District. In 2024, the program expanded to include students through grade 8.

  4. Middle School Programs

    SHI operates culturally focused programs serving students in grades 6–8, including Indigenous Science and makerspace (STEAM) activities, Traditional Games, and Voices on the Land.

  5. High School Programs

    SHI sponsors a Northwest Coast arts academy, a culturally integrated college and career readiness program, an Indigenous science program, an initiative to support and increase the number of Alaska Native teachers, and Traditional Games.

  6. Postsecondary Programs

    SHI sponsors postsecondary programs to connect language students to language teachers and to recruit and support Alaska Native educators. The institute also administers a strength program for young men, collaborates on an arts degree program, and offers scholarships.
