Postsecondary Artist Training

SHI sponsors classes, apprenticeships, and internships, and—in partnership with the University of Alaska Southeast and the Institute of American Indian Arts—an arts degree program with an emphasis on Northwest Coast arts.

  1. Classes

    SHI offers art classes at Atnané Hít (Sealaska Heritage Arts Campus) in Juneau and elsewhere in Alaska and the Lower 48. In some cases, students are eligible for credits through the University of Alaska Southeast that may be applied toward a degree with an emphasis on Northwest Coast arts.

  2. Master-Apprentice System

    SHI sponsors apprenticeships between master artists and students on a project-by-project basis.

  3. Northwest Coast Arts Degree Program

    SHI—in partnership with the University of Alaska Southeast (UAS)—developed an Associate of Arts (AA) degree with an emphasis on Northwest Coast arts. The program is part of a larger effort to establish a four-year degree track through UAS and the Institute of American Indian Arts (IAIA) in Santa Fe, New Mexico.
